It’s not discrimination if you can save a buck

Woman kicked out of New Zealand for being too fat

NZ wants to keep out the obese because they (ok, we) are a potential burden to the national health care system.

Ok. So, here’s the next headlines we should see:

“NZ refuses visa to gay men because they might get AIDS”

“NZ refuses visa to black people because they have a higher risk of diabetes

“NZ refuses visa to old people because they’re… well, old”

No? We’re not going to see those headlines?

I’ve noticed a lot of posting back and forth over this, with people ardently for or against either side. A lot of outrage gets thrown around on either side, with a lot of hot-button topics pulled up to garner support - race, sexuality, etc.

The differentiating factor that seems to get lost is the difference between “overweight” “BBW” “Curvy”, or any of those characterizations, and the term “Clinically Obese.” Obesity is a medical condition where body fat has accumulated to the point that it negatively impacts health. It is a completely medical classification, despite the fact that it is erroneously applied by ignorant people to people who don’t fit their definition of normal weight.

The headlines you have proposed are part of a false syllogism. They would be valid if, say, they barred people with a family history of obesity, or people who were “overweight” but not clinically obese, or people with a slightly higher risk factor for obesity.

The NZ immigration department DOES rule out people with HIV, diabetes and osteoarthritis. Whether or not the person that has those medical conditions is an old, gay black man is completely irrelevant.
